The Biggest Challenges of Interdisciplinary Research—and How to Overcome Them

Interdisciplinary research has become increasingly important for addressing complex scientific and societal challenges. Problems such as climate change, public health, artificial intelligence, and sustainable development rarely fit neatly into a single academic discipline. Researchers therefore increasingly work across fields, bringing together different methods, perspectives, and areas of expertise.

This shift creates exciting opportunities for scientists and early-career researchers. Working across disciplines can lead to new ideas, innovative methods, and discoveries that would be difficult to achieve within a single field.

However, interdisciplinary research also comes with significant challenges.

From education and funding to scientific communication and professional recognition, researchers working across disciplines often have to navigate systems that were designed around traditional academic fields.

Here are some of the biggest challenges of interdisciplinary research.

1. Education and Training Are Organized Around Separate Disciplines

From school through university, education is largely organized into distinct subjects and academic disciplines. We learn biology, chemistry, physics, computer science, economics, or sociology as separate fields.

This specialization is valuable. Scientists need deep expertise to make meaningful contributions to their field. However, it can also make interdisciplinary collaboration difficult later in their careers.

Most researchers are trained primarily to think and work within their own discipline. After graduation, they may suddenly find themselves working with colleagues who use different terminology, methods, assumptions, and standards of evidence.

For an interdisciplinary research project to succeed, everyone involved needs to learn how to work across these boundaries.

This means developing skills that are not always explicitly taught in traditional academic training:

  • Communicating complex ideas to researchers outside your field
  • Understanding different research methods
  • Recognizing the strengths and limitations of other disciplines

3. Communicating Interdisciplinary Research Is Difficult

Conducting interdisciplinary research is only part of the challenge. Communicating the results is equally important.

Scientific conferences and journals are often organized around specific fields or relatively narrow research communities. This makes sense from a practical perspective, but it can create problems for interdisciplinary researchers.

Where should you publish a study that combines methods from biology, computer science, and engineering?

And how do you explain your findings to audiences with very different backgrounds?

These questions matter because researchers need visibility. Publications, conference presentations, collaborations, and citations all contribute to building a scientific reputation and, particularly for early-career researchers, a professional profile.

Interdisciplinary research can make this more complicated.

Your work may be relevant to several communities without belonging entirely to any one of them. As a result, its impact can become scattered across disciplines.

This makes interdisciplinary science communication an essential skill.

Researchers need to be able to explain the same project at different levels of technical detail depending on their audience. The ability to communicate across disciplinary boundaries can also become a significant career advantage outside academia, where scientists frequently work with engineers, business professionals, policymakers, designers, or other specialists.

4. Interdisciplinary Researchers Can Struggle With Recognition

Perhaps the biggest challenge is not technical or financial—it is cultural.

Academic systems have traditionally rewarded specialization. Researchers build their careers by becoming experts in a particular field, publishing in relevant journals, attending specialized conferences, and developing a recognizable area of expertise.

Interdisciplinary researchers can sometimes find themselves caught between these structures.

There is a persistent perception that someone who knows a little about many fields cannot compete with a specialist who knows one field extremely well.

The familiar idea of the “Jack of all trades, master of none” captures this concern.

But interdisciplinary research challenges that assumption.

Being interdisciplinary does not mean being an expert in everything. Instead, it means developing deep expertise in one or more areas while being able to collaborate effectively across disciplinary boundaries.

The ability to connect different areas of knowledge can itself be a form of expertise.

For scientists and young professionals, this is an important distinction. Your interdisciplinary profile should not be presented as a lack of specialization. Instead, explain the unique perspective, technical skills, and ability to connect fields that you bring to a research team.

5. Interdisciplinary Collaboration Requires More Communication

There is another challenge that is easy to underestimate: collaboration itself.

Researchers from different disciplines may use the same words to mean different things—or completely different words to describe similar concepts. They may also have different expectations about timelines, methodologies, authorship, data, or what constitutes convincing evidence.

As a result, interdisciplinary teams often need to spend more time establishing a shared language and understanding.

This is not wasted time. It is part of the research process.

Successful interdisciplinary teams deliberately create opportunities to discuss assumptions, clarify terminology, and make sure everyone understands the project’s goals.

For early-career researchers, learning to navigate these differences can be one of the most valuable outcomes of interdisciplinary work.

Embrace Interdisciplinary Research

Interdisciplinary research is not always easy. Traditional education, funding structures, publication systems, and academic culture were largely built around individual disciplines.

But the complexity of today’s research questions makes collaboration across those boundaries increasingly important.

Don’t be afraid to be the “Jack of all trades.”

You don’t need to abandon your scientific expertise to become an interdisciplinary researcher. Instead, build on your existing expertise while learning how to communicate, collaborate, and think across disciplinary boundaries.

For scientists and young professionals, interdisciplinary skills can open doors to new research collaborations, career opportunities, and ways of solving problems.

The ability to connect ideas that traditionally belong to different fields may be exactly what makes your work stand out.
